Reading

We inspire all children to develop a love of reading! When children have finished reading books their family have bought them, they can swap books in our reading bank. Every child should be able to build an engaging home library so we purchase class readers for children to keep. We also encourage children to own a library card and visit the school library bus on a regular basis. We have heavily invested in quality, rich literature and the school library enables all children to access age-appropriate books. Our staff develop a language rich environment through discussion and daily reading.

Reading is an essential life skill. We teach word reading, phonics and early language acquisition when children start in Early Years. More complex comprehension skills are then developed as soon as the children are ready. Direct, focused phonics is taught every day in Reception and key stage 1. Children read from ‘Little Wandle’ books with the sounds they know, while they are learning to read. Teachers and teaching assistants provide extra daily ‘Little Wandle’ practice for the children who need additional support.
