Writing

At Newton Tony Primary School, we believe in fostering a love for writing, engaging a community of writers who enjoy being creative and purposeful.

Our children learn the complete process of writing:

  • encouraging children to write for purpose and audience where possible
  • encourage confidence and valuing mark making in EYFS
  • setting specific goals and fostering inquiry skills;
  • becoming fluent with handwriting, spelling and sentence structures
  • using the principles of Talk 4 Writing until structures are embedded
  • using word processing and other programmes to present writing in a different format

Writing should encompass a range of genres, divided mainly in fiction and non-fiction:

  • to inform, explain and describe (such as reports, explanations, travel guides and posters)
  • to persuade, argue and advise (reviews, opinion pieces, advertisements)
  • to analyse, review and comment (commentaries, articles)
