Helping in School

Voluntary Helpers Information.

The school actively encourages good relationships between school, home and the community. The children benefit from the voluntary help given by parents and others. In the interests of safety and wellbeing we would like you to take time to read and know some of our routines prior to beginning working in school.

DBS Checks

In accordance with Government guidelines, it is necessary that a vetting and barring check (DBS) is carried out on any person working in school. You will be required to fill in the relevant form, which is available from the school office. If police clearance is not granted to any individual, they will be informed.


It is very important that anyone working in school is aware of the necessity for total confidentiality regarding any information learned about any individual (child or adult). If you see or hear anything which causes you concern, please report your concerns to Miss Priestley, the Headteacher and Designated Safeguarding Lead.


You are welcome to join us for a tea or coffee and socialise at break times

Health and Safety

Please make sure you sign in and sign out before leaving the premises. The signing in book is kept on the front desk. It is important to know who is on site should any emergency occur.

Fire Drill

Please familiarise yourself with the fire policy and fire safety notices around the school. All exits are clearly labelled. If you do hear the fire bell, please take part in the drill by leaving school by the nearest and safest exit, taking any child in your care with you, to the meeting point on the playground.

Classroom Safety

If any child you are working with should sustain any injury, please inform the class teacher immediately. Please do not treat an injured child yourself but get a member of staff to deal with the injury. All our staff are trained in dealing with minor injuries.

For information: Medical facilities are located in the staff room and near the Disabled toilet.

  • The class teacher will inform you if any child you will be working with has a specific need that you need to be aware of.
  • Potentially unsafe equipment should never be left unattended.
  • Be aware during any craft or cookery sessions.

Child Protection

Children and young people have a fundamental right to be protected from harm. Families have a right to expect school to be a safe and secure environment. All school have a legal duty to work with other agencies and the police, to safeguard children’s welfare.

Please be aware that you may find yourself in a position where a child may confide in you and you ,may be uncomfortable with that knowledge. This is a Child Protection issue. You should quietly listen but do not promise to keep a secret or ask any questions. Please report immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead who is Miss Priestley, the Headteacher or in her absence to Mrs Hillier.

Time and Places to work

We welcome regular visitors to come and help with activities. Please arrange with the class teacher. If you are unable to come in at the pre-arranged time, can you let the school know as soon as possible. Normally you will be working in a classroom or in a quiet area.

Jobs you may be asked to do

Please tell us what you enjoy doing with the children! We can then give you an activity or job you will be happy with, and feel confident doing. We need you to come back and help us, so please ask if you’re not sure about anything.

Pupil behaviour

Teachers are delighted to hear about tasks which have gone well.  We follow the principles of Restorative Justice at our school.


This should be an enjoyable experience for both child and adult. Any comments written by the children’s parents in the home/school book should be referred to the teacher. Our aim is to make children life-long readers.

  •  reading sentence correctly
  •  using the first letter
  •  correcting him/herself
  •  making a sensible guess
  •  getting the word correct
